Re: sunday school and youth fellowship this weekend
Hi Everyone,
Barbara and I got here safely on Thursday and the last two days have been helping Theresa and Mark (daughter and son-in-law) clean up their flooded house. Their contractor is starting to rebuild on Monday.
I'd ask all of you to pray really hard for the folks down here. I cannot begin to describe the total devestation of Slidell, my home town; and Slidell is only about 1/10 of the total area affected by Katrina. We went to visit friends in the neighborhood I grew up in today - imagine, if you will, Victoria Crossing. Now imagine that every street you drive down has trash piled 6 feet high in front of EVERY SINGLE HOUSE. - furniture, clothes, refrigerators, washers & dryers, wallboard, clothes, bookshelves, etc, etc. In addition to the trash that includes everything in the house, imagine every other house with a 2-3 foot diameter 50 foot tree cut up and stacked. About every 10th house, imagine a tree crashed into the middle of the house. Have you got that image in your mind? This is just Victoria Crossing. Now imagine that scene down EVERY street in West Chester, Downingtown, and Coatesville, and you have an idea of what Slidell is like, and remember that Slidell is 1/10th or less of the total area affected by Katrina and Rita. Look at a US map. Look at Kansas - the devestated area that I just described above in Victoria Crossing covers an area the size of Kansas. I have seen only a small part of this area, and I am just overwhelmed by it all.
Barbara and I went through a FEMA line manned by the Pennsylvania National Guard and got ice, water, and MRE's (they're actually pretty good.) There are tens of thousands of people still living in shelter and depending on this support.
Tomorrow, we'll be going to church to see a lot of our friends, and the rest of the week we will be working to clean up people's houses. It's going to be years before this area is put back together.
Please pray for our energy levels, and pray that the people we help will see God's love. This is such a tragedy, but the response from the Body of Christ has been monumental.
see you all soon,
Carl (Barbara, too).
